Christmas Around the World

Posted: August 26, 2016 in Uncategorized

I have developed a Christmas Story / Property that I am starting to show around in the hopes of getting it produced. In case there is any interest, and in order to protect myself, I am posting it here, just a small treatment.

Ken Barrs “Christmas Around the World”

Day Interior Telegraph Office

Lights come up and we see an old timey Telegraph Office, its operator has his back to the audience, he is receiving a telegram. Telegram finished, he realizes he has an audience; he turns to face the audience and proceeds to introduce himself.

Wilford Pine

Oh, hello, I’m sorry; I didn’t see you all there. My name is Wilford Pine, and I’m the Telegraph Operator here at Sherman’s Bluff. For those of you that don’t know, the telegraph was the main source of information for a very long time. And since here at Sherman’s Bluff we have families from all over the globe, it’s important for them to be able to stay in touch with their families.

Wilford Pine takes this opportunity to interact with a few children in the audience, asking them where they’re from. Segment concludes, and Wilford begins a story.

Well, one of the advantages of being the telegraph operator is that at this time of year you get to help families connect, and also it’s an opportunity to hear about the different Christmas traditions from all sorts of places.

Just the other day I took a message for the Schmidt Family. Did you know that a big part of the Christmas celebrations in Germany is Advent. Several different types of Advent calendars are used in German homes. As well as the traditional one made of card that are used in many countries, there are ones made out of a wreath of Fir tree branches with 24 decorated boxes or bags hanging from it. Each box or bag has a little present in it. Another type is called an ‘Advent Kranz’ and is a ring of fir branches that has four candles on it. This is like the Advent candles that are sometimes used in Churches. One candle is lit at the beginning of each week in Advent. Boy oh boy would I like to get to Germany one day and experience that.

Wilford stands up and addresses the audience.

Well folks, give me a minute and I’ll be right down to talk, take pictures, anything you like.

Wilford proceeds to the audience and the photo op area.

Fade to black

This is only one show, we will do other countries and their stories, a different one every hour. We will talk about holiday food and music from each country.

Here are some pictures to inspire the stage set.

The Yule Lads have been around for many years, their story unchanged. They are a major part of the holiday season in Iceland. What I have done here is to reinterpret them, through the eyes of an outsider, and to modernize them, just a little. With my original text polished by Editor Jose M. Tirado, the Yule Lads are brought to life with all new, all original illustrations by Danya Esposito. Soon to be a holiday classic…
